Site visit to City’s Manenberg Public Housing fire-damaged units

Human Settlements Mayco Member, Councillor Carl Pophaim, recently visited a number of Public Housing units in Manenberg which had been damaged by fires and are now undergoing maintenance. The City’s See something? Say something! campaign encourages residents to speak out about units which are in urgent need of maintenance and repair work. 

'I've visited fire-damaged Community Residential Units (CRUs) in the Manenberg area where we are carrying out essential maintenance repairs and minor replacements. Even the inclement weather that we've been experiencing at times won't stop us from delivering much-needed service delivery to our communities. I was able to watch as bricklayers, carpenters, electricians, painters and plumbers carried out their work at the units. We recently launched a Public Housing campaign to improve safety and maintenance at our residential units. Maintenance days are an excellent way to pool our resources and attend to urgent work as well as general maintenance. 

'The City is investing in maintenance, repairs and upgrades of more than R1,2 billion over the next few years at its public housing units across the metro. We want the tenants who live in units to be happy, comfortable and secure. As one of South Africa's largest landlords, we take the wellbeing of our tenants and the maintenance of these units seriously. Importantly, our maintenance investment is absolutely dependent on rental income and we urge our tenants to pay their way to enable us to do even more to maintain and upgrade our public housing units,' said Councillor Pophaim.
